NASF, AESF Extend Corrosion and Accelerated Corrosion Course Registration Deadline

The registration deadline for this course has been extended to Feb. 6, 2023.

The deadline for registration for the Corrosion and Accelerated Corrosion Tests course offered by the AESF Foundation and National Association for Surface Finishing (NASF) has been extended to Feb. 6, 2023. This is the first course of 2023 and is being held online in February and March.

The course is one of many being taught this year. Each course is taught by a qualified NASF/AESF Foundation instructor who is there to support participants’ educational goals. Registered students receive electronic course materials in advance to help guide them through the course. Because the program is online, students follow along on their computers with the ability to ask questions during lessons. Recordings of the sessions are available upon request to students within 30 days of the original training date. After the course’s completion, an optional exam is available at the students’ locations with a proctor.

The AESF Foundation offers custom courses as well, enabling students to create a customized curriculum tailored to their and their company’s educational objectives. The courses are taught over two to four days in-person or virtually, depending on the participant’s preference.

  • Smart Modeling and Simulation of Electroplating Systems for Real-Time Monitoring of Chemical, Water and Energy Consumption (NASF Summer Research Grant)

    An AESF Foundation summer research grant provided an excellent opportunity for a PhD student to learn how to use chemical engineering fundamentals to scientifically characterize an electroplating process through integrated dynamic modeling and simulation, and how to develop digital twin (DT)-based virtual plant that can be of any process configuration.  This is a critical step for the investigation of new technology development for smart and sustainable manufacturing in the surface finishing industry.

  • Non-PFAS Wetting Agents for Decorative Chromium(VI) Plating

    This article is based on a presentation given at NASF SUR/FIN 2022, in Rosemont, Illinois, in Session 6, Responses to PFAS / PFOA.  It follows the case study of three facilities’ conversion from PFAS-containing wetting agents to non-PFAS equivalents, eliminating PFAS and moving forward with a smaller and more sustainable environmental footprint.  The journey of conversion from PFAS-containing wetting agents in both chromic-sulfuric etch and hexavalent decorative plating tanks can be complicated and winding due to deep rooted standard industry practices, as well as state and federal regulations.  Outlined here is a clear course of action that led to eliminating PFAS from the facilities’ wetting agent strategies. 

  • NASF/AESF Foundation Research Project #123: Electrochemical Manufacturing for Energy Applications - 6th Quarter Report

    The NASF-AESF Foundation Research Board selected a project on electrodeposition toward developing low-cost and scalable manufacturing processes for hydrogen fuel cells and electrolysis cells for clean transportation and distributed power applications.  In this period, work focused on 3D printing anode support for solid oxide fuel cells, SOFC (or cathode for solid oxide electrolyzers, SOEC) based on our designed optimization outlined in the previous report.
