The 1998 Large Plating Job Shop Survey, a biennial survey conducted by Products Finishing, is complete. The 1996 survey had many of the same respondents as the previous survey. However, 18 out of 25 respondents in the 1998 survey did not respond in the 1996 survey. Therefore, it is hard to say whether these large job shops have grown or remained stable in size during the economic upswing of recent years.
But, Products Finishing did get some interesting answers to the opinion questions posed in the survey. The survey asked platers three questions:
- Other industries are promoting their advantages and benefits. What should the plating industry do to promote itself?
- Are you involved in the Common Sense Initiative (CSI) and Strategic Goals program? If so, why? If not, why?
- What are your plans for growth, diversity and/or staying competitive?
The first question resulted in similar responses from virtually everyone who answered it. Most people thought that the best way for the plating industry to promote itself was to demonstrate that the industry operates in an environmentally responsible manner. Many of the respondents answered this way because they feel that regulators and legislators look at the industry as a "dirty" industry. Also, some respondents felt that the plating industry should promote how its processes enhance a number of products that are used by millions of people everyday. Without plating there are simply a number of products that would no longer have the durability or other properties required of them. Many people outside the industry do not truly understand what plating does.
The second question asked whether or not each company was a member of the CSI and Strategic Goals program. Fourteen of the 25 companies are currently participating in the Strategic Goals program while one company is currently assessing the advantages/disadvantages of the program. There were a variety of reasons why companies said they signed up for the program, including: demonstrate a positive relationship with the EPA/federal government; help establish environmental goals; become more efficient; be at the forefront of environmental technology; and inform regulators of the industry's environmental stewardship. Despite all of the talk about the program this year, two companies were unaware of the CSI and Strategic Goals program.
The third question asked platers about their plans for growth and diversity. The two most popular answers were making the plating process more efficient and developing new products. Other answers included: moving into new industries; improving quality and service; expanding geographic coverage; and reducing costs.
To see how each company is doing, note the survey results. Also, if you would like for your company to be listed in the 2000 Large Plating Job Shop Survey, inform Steve Kline, Jr. at 513-527-8837 or
