Conferences, Shows and Schools

I’ve been a commercial painting contractor in North Carolina for the past 30 years and am now getting chased out of business by house painters. I’m getting more and more calls to do powder coating and ceramic coating, but I don’t have a clue where to start. Could you recommend a good workshop for beginners here on the East Coast where I could learn more about these type coatings and how to apply them? Would the Electrocoat Conference be over my head?

Q. I’ve been a commercial painting contractor in North Carolina for the past 30 years and am now getting chased out of business by house painters. We’re doing more and more work in our shop doing conventional coating of file cabinets, outdoor furniture, etc., using industrial urethanes. I’m getting more and more calls to do powder coating and ceramic coating, but I don’t have a clue where to start.

I enjoy the magazine especially the Painting Clinic. I’ve learned a bunch from it—now I need to take it to the next level. J.R.

A. The Electrocoat Show in 2008 will be held May 14–16 in Indianapolis. It would be a great place to start—they have an entire conference track dedicated to e-coat basics—but only if you are interested in getting into electrocoating. I can’t add anything more about electrocoating, but I can address other coatings.

Ceramic coatings such as porcelain enamel and glazes involve the use of frits which must be processed by fusing at high temperatures. This process is energy-intensive. For that reason, the appliance industry replaced porcelain enamel with high-performance liquid coatings and powder coatings wherever possible. If you are interested in all types of liquid organic coatings, shows, expositions and conferences discussing the various materials and application equipment are listed in the Calendar of Events section of PFONLINE (pfonline.com/calendar). If you are interested in powder coatings, Nick Liberto is in a better position than I to address them.
