Question:
We manufacture made-to-order aluminum doors and are interested in finding a powder coating to be used for exterior applications. We will be fabricating these doors from stock lengths after coating. What would be your recommendations for a powder coating for our requirements? J.S.
Answer:
TGIC polyester would be my initial choice given the limited amount of information. This powder coating has good UV resistance, good corrosion resistance, good formability and is reasonably priced. Acrylic powder coatings have better UV resistance but are harder materials, which can be a problem in post forming and manufacturing your product. You should talk to a qualified powder formulator to obtain a specific formulation that is priced right and provides all your physical, corrosion and appearance properties.
