Volvo’s 508-hp Concept
Although we would like to write about the Volvo S60 Polestar concept that was introduced at the LA Auto Show this week, something tells us that it would be wrong.

Although we would like to write about the Volvo S60 Polestar concept that was introduced at the LA Auto Show this week, something tells us that it would be wrong. Consider: While Volvos are safe, this car has a T6 in-line engine under its hood that produces 508 hp @ 6,500 rpm and 424 lb-ft of torque @ 5,500, not the 300 hp and 325 lb-ft that are characteristic of the Volvo S60 found on a dealer’s lot near you.
(How do they do it? Well, among other things, they’ve modified the cylinder head, combustion chamber, inlet manifold, and air intake, deployed a Garret 3171 turbo, and attached a Ferrita 3.5-in. stainless steel exhaust system, and they’ve probably done a little something to the engine control module, too. The chassis has been lowered and reinforced. The Haldex all-wheel-drive system has been tuned; an Öhlins suspension used.)
The Volvo S60 Polestar Concept has a top speed of more than 186 mph and a 0 to 100 km/h (a.k.a., 62 mph) of 3.9 seconds.
While we are confident that the S60 Polestar Concept is still safe in the context that Volvo builds its vehicles stout and strong, we are similarly confident that should such a car become something other than a concept, owner’s licenses wouldn’t be too safe for too long.
