Tired of all the bad news that seems to permeate everything you read, see or hear in the mainstream news media?

Me, too. So we dug around in the mailbag, the inbox and anywhere else we could find to bring you some good news.

Hats off to Don and Erika Rollman of Olympia Powder Coating in Olympia, Wash., who stepped up and donated their services and expertise after vandals destroyed some playground equipment at Tumwater Falls Park in their hometown.

Earlier this year, good-for-nothing thieves stole bronze and copper railings from a pair of concrete boats that children in the community played on virtually every day for the last 50 years. Zeigler’s Welding offered to replace the railings for free, and Don and Erika offered to powder coat them as a gift to the community.

“Attaboy” to Sun Glo Plating in Tampa, Fla., a finalist in Fifth Third Bank’s “Curious Customer” ad campaign, which gives cash prizes to the top three vote-getters.

Andrew Pozin, Sun-Glo’s CEO, said the company was honored for its expansion from a three-employee plating shop to an operation with more than 50 employees who also perform manufacturing, stamping and machining.

Good news for Accuride Corp. in Evansville, Ind., which recently announced a major upgrade to its powder coating line that will enable it to recall or hire about 30 workers in the next several years. Accuride makes and coats commercial truck wheels, and plans to invest $5.8 million in the updated powder line. President and CEO Rick Dauch said his company divested itself of other product lines to focus on its wheel business, which employs more than 150 workers.

A belated congrats to Ken Russell from Precious Plate in Niagara Falls, N.Y., who was honored recently by his company for 30 years of service in the finishing industry. He currently serves as environmental health and safety manager for the company.

Congrats to Winona Powder Coating in Mentone, Ind., which recently opened a new 167,000-sq-ft location—more than five times the size of its old location just nine miles away. The new facility has a powder coating line with a five-stage washer, automatic and manual coating booths, and digitally controlled ovens. It can coat parts as large as 6 by 3 feet, and as long as 24 feet, which doubles the old facility’s capacity.

A round of applause for Columbia Chemical in Brunswick, Ohio, which was among an elite group of  mid-sized companies in northern Ohio to be recognized at the 2013 Leading EDGE Awards honoring value-creating companies in the region. The winning companies were identified by the value they create based on a sum of their earnings before interest and taxes (EBIT), and total taxable compensation for all northeast Ohio-based employees.

Happy Birthday to Atotech, as this summer marks the 20th anniversary of the specialty chemicals and equipment maker’s birth following the merger of U.S. plating company M&T Harshaw with Schering Electroplating. Back then, Atotech had 1,600 employees in 20 countries, but it has grown to 4,000 staffers in more than 40 countries with headquarters in Berlin. Next year, we’ll buy you a beer.

And finally, any time a finishing shop wins an award from a California regulatory agency is reason to stand and cheer. We counted 42 shops among the 668 that received “Good Corporate Citizens” recognition recently by the Sanitation Districts of Los Angeles County.

The shops met their limits for wastewater discharge for at least a year, maintained their environmental equipment and fulfilled all permit requirements set by the SDLAC.
