Holy Cow!
What’s the world's top destroyer of the environment? Here’s a hint: it isn’t your business, or the auto industry, or power plant emissions.
It’s the cow.
According to a United Nations report, the world's rapidly growing herds of cattle present a grave threat to the climate, forests and wildlife. Livestock, and especially the world’s 1.5 billion cattle, are responsible for 18% of the greenhouse gases that cause global warming--more than cars, planes and all other forms of transport put together.
And we’re not just talking about greenhouse gases. The report blames livestock herds for numerous environmental problems, from acid rain to the introduction of alien species. It says damage from livestock herds is producing deserts, creating dead zones in the oceans, poisoning rivers and drinking water, and destroying coral reefs.
Worse, the report concludes that the damage done by livestock will more than double by 2050, as demand for meat increases and herds continue to grow.
So if you think you’ve got it bad dealing with environmental and worker safety issues, consider that things might be worse. Someone might soon be charged with figuring out a way to deal with cow flatulence, and that’s definitely not a job I’d want to have.
