McBrainwashed
A few months ago, researchers discovered that even carrots, milk and apple juice tasted better to young kids when they were wrapped in the familiar packaging of fast-food giant McDonald’s. In the study, scientists had children compare identical foods in name-brand and unmarked wrappers. The unmarked foods always lost.
Involving 63 children ages 3 to 5, the research vividly illustrated the power of advertising. And, it got me thinking about how finishers could take advantage of a similar kind of “brand” awareness.
Yes, the Powder Coating Institute has its “Powder Coated Tough” brand and has been fairly successful in raising awareness of the technology and its benefits. But other segments of the finishing industry lag behind.
I’m not saying finishers should try to brainwash potential users, but maybe a few catchy slogans wouldn’t hurt. I’ll start us off. How about “Paint: The Other Organic Finishing Process”? Or “Say it with Plating”?
Oh, and while I’m thinking about it, a multi-million dollar advertising and marketing budget to help get the word out would be helpful, too.
