Climate Change Hysteria

Take a deep breath. Hold it for a couple of seconds, then exhale slowly. Relax, because what you’re about to read is likely to cause a rise in your blood pressure.

No less an august body of environmental and climate experts than the U.S. Supreme Court ruled last week that carbon dioxide is now a greenhouse gas, and subject to regulation under the Clean Air Act. That’s right, it’s official—your exhalations, and mine, and those of every other breathing creature on the planet, are contributing to global warming.

This decision is just the latest in a series of events that have marked the rapid evolution of the climate change debate from one based at least somewhat on reason to one of hysteria. Any science that may have been underpinning the arguments for or against climate change—and man’s role in producing or accelerating it—has largely gone out the window. In its place is the ideology of hard-liners on both sides of the issue. There’s very little room for debate any more, and that’s not good when we are trying to deal rationally with such a potentially serious issue.

RE: Finishers Perspective

Last month we asked what you thought about the English vs. Metric system being used in the United States. Here are a few of your responses…

Don Baudrand says: “Metric is the way to go. It is compatible with the rest of the world, making it easier to do business in all markets. When all this started I was contacted (as an expert ) to review the proposed metric units applicable to the plating and finishing industry. one of the rules was that no unit can be named for a person or country. Then they proposed such as Pascals, Celsius, etc.”…

Paul Bradley of Trimite Powders, Inc. says: “Our company takes and ships orders in imperial units, but all manufacturing is done in metric. This is foreign to new recruits, but once they get the hang of kilos, without exception, they find it easier to work in. For weighed items they find having grams and kilos much easier to understand than lbs and ounces, very few mistakes are made and precision weighing is much easier. Converting from %’s to kilos is very easy compared to doing it in lbs and oz’s so scale up from lab to plant goes fairly seamlessly – if there is an issue it is very quick to have visibility and temperature is more easily understand when 0 degrees is freezing and 100 is boiling. The only issues we really have is selling to Canada – who place orders in kg and expect to receive them in kg! Unfortunately they receive increments of 22.68kg (50lbs)! They often aren’t happy!“

Mohan Chaudhari of Columbus Metallurgical Services says “Yes, we will benefit tremendously if our companies used metric measurements. When I attended engineering school (Indian Institute of Technology) we did everything metric! I have been in the USA for the last almost 40 years, and always wondered why the metric is still not a preferred system. It's about time we switch!”

Congratulations to Mohan Chaudhari, who is the winner of this month’s $50 gift certificate to Amazon.com!

FEATURE ARTICLE - Racking And Production Strategies for Powder Coating
Racking is an under-appreciated - and often neglected - aspect of powder coating. This article looks at the role that racking plays in the development of a production strategy.

POWDER COATING CLINIC - Products Failing Salt Spray Test
This PF reader has repeatedly failed a 336-hour salt spray test on aluminum casting. His company’s pretreat system and coating have met the same requirement on steel and a shorter salt spray test on aluminum castings. Nick Liberto provides help for them to improve their adhesion and corrosion resistance.

FEATURE ARTICLE - Passivation of Stainless Steel
Many machine shops, purchasing agents and engineers are somewhat in the dark when it comes to the relationship between corrosion resistant (stainless) steel and chemical passivation.

PLATING CLINIC - Cadmium Plating Of The Stainless Steel Bolts
A PF Reader has recently been asked to cadmium plate stainless steel bolts. His company routinely plates cadmium but has never had much success plating on stainless steel. Art Kushner helps him figure out a plan.

FEATURE ARTICLE - Specifying Buffing Compound
Buffing is still regarded by many in the industry as being something of an art form. In today's competitive industry, where customers demand precision and reproducible results, that mindset is a dangerous one.
