Our Wednesday afternoon session offers top-notch EN experts who have collaborated to come up with the best operational practice of Electroless Nickel.

This is an in depth approach to give owners and operators the information and techniques that will allow them to do the job right the first time. In a time when costs are out of control in the metals market, rejects can be one of the biggest drains on the metal finishing facility.

EN Properties and Benefits

The session will be an introduction to EN highlighting its benefits over conventional electroplating.  It will cover the properties of hi-phos, mid-phos and low-phos and how EN can be applied.  It will also give a basic overview of the chemistries and deposit characteristics.

Equipment for Electroless Nickel

This presentation will go over recommended plating equipment to optimize bath performance and process control of Electroless Nickel.  It will cover; tanks, heaters, controllers, ventilation, pumps, chemical feeders, plumbing, etc. It will list all the choices available and what is best practice.  At the end of this presentation you should be able to walk away with the capability of building your ideal Electroless Nickel plating line with the confidence that you are using the best possible equipment available.

Pretreatment of Ferrous Alloys (Steel)

Leading OEMs worldwide depend on the quality of electroless nickel plated parts to enhance wear and corrosion performance, improve appearance, and enable product performance. Proper surface conditioning is as important to successful electroless nickel plating as the selection of the nickel process itself. The majority of plating failures are the result of improper cleaning and activation cycles. This presentation will discuss the planned cycle of controlled treatment steps, each calling for matched cleaners and activators designed for the substrate and finial finish.

Pretreatment of Unusual Substrates

Occasionally electroless nickel is needed on exotic or less common materials to provide some desirable properties of the coating. Such as wear or corrosion resistance to the substrate.  The paper will discuss successful methods in preparing some of the substrates for EN plating.

Electroless Nickel Process Control and Solution Maintenance

Electroless nickel is used today for a very large number of applications on a wide range of substrates.  This has necessitated the development of specialized baths, the most common of which are those that produce a nickel-phosphorous alloy.  These solutions have limitations to their life because the process of nickel reduction by sodium hypophosphite is self-contaminating.  Several methods have been presented to extend bath life through the use of different regeneration technologies that can in theory extend the bath life indefinitely.  The focus of this paper will discuss the various aspects associated with the typical EN application and present ideas to maximize useful bath life.

In a world of basics, receiving what you pay for is an important element of any successful business transaction. Providing assurances, that any product will fulfill an application and, offering some predictability or insight of success are important qualifications, which also apply for Electroless Nickel deposits.  Having the ability to provide assurances that, on any given day, an EN deposit will meet the end requirements or needs of the application is crucial. Besides heat treatment for hardening, adhesion improvement or embrittlement relief, other operations are often performed on EN coatings after plating to improve or modify their properties.  These operations include chromating, painting, applications of other plated coatings, blackening, machining, soldering and welding.  These different applications will be discussed in this session.
