Northern Illinois - Innovations in Coating Technologies & Quality Control

Date: Tuesday, April 29, 2014 - Tuesday, April 29, 2014

Location: Lisle, IL

Join the CCAI Northern Illinois Chapter for a dinner meeting with presentations on Color Quality Control and Innovations in Coating Technologies.

Paul Barnes from HunterLab will present:  What Color is Your Part?

A product’s color is an indicator of overall product quality or process variation.  A change in color can effect the acceptance of product by your customer and a change could indicate a problem with raw materials, process, or some other product quality attribute.

The color of fabricated steel and aluminum is difficult to measure because:

List is reflected in multiple directions from a metal;
The base metal will contribute to the color if a clear or semi-opaque coating is applied; and
The thickness, gloss, and texture of the coating effects the overall color and appearance.

The talk will describe how to tackle this challenging application for consistent results and to ensure color consistency along the supply chain.  Discussion will include how color is evaluated, measured, and communicated specifically for fabricated metal products.  Topics will include discussion of the tristimulus color scales, basic color measurement techniques, and color measurement technology.

Joe Laubenthal of Acme Finishing will present:  Decoral® Powder Coated Wood Grain & Decorative Metal Finishes

Architects, builders, and manufacturers are discovering the incredible advantages of Decoral powder coated wood grain and decorative metal finishes provided by Acme Finishing Company. Our sophisticated and patented process applies a decorative finish on powder coated surfaces using a sublimation method. Coatable surfaces include aluminum, glass, plastic, iron, or ceramic. Finishes can be applied on fixtures, windows, doors, blinds, shelving, extrusions and nearly any other type of product where value is enhanced by beauty, durability and safety.

Acme Finishing can provide authentic powder coated marble, wood grain, and stone finishes for any decorative motif. Additionally, these finishes are available for architectural applications demanding toughness, durability, and long- term weatherability.

Dye sublimation is the transfer of a digital image (wood grain, granite, marble and other decorative images) plotted on a special film into a single powder coating layer.  The transfer is performed using a heat press (vacuum and oven) which changes the dye particles from solid to gas to solid and merges them with the polymers of the powder coated layer.

Dye sublimation has traditionally only been available for products such as t-shirts, drinking mugs, mouse pads, etc.

The special sublimation inks penetrate the full depth of the powder coating layer, much like a permanent tattoo on your skin!
