OSHA Review of Workplace Chemicals Standards

As part of its regulatory review effort, OSHA is developing a Request for Information seeking input to help identify ways to address occupational exposure to chemicals.

OSHA says it intends to review its Permissible Exposure Limits. Adopted in 1971, only a few of the PELs have been successfully updated since that time.

There is widespread agreement among industry, labor, and occupational safety and health organizations that the PELs need revision to take into account newer scientific data that indicate significant occupational health risks exist at levels below current PELs.
