The new plant in Walker, Mich., represents the commercialization of Plasan's new carbon fiber processing technology for automotive applications, which will allow for production of 30,000 to 50,000 vehicles annually.

Plasan Carbon Composites (PCC, Bennington, Vt., USA), a supplier of carbon fiber composite solutions to the automotive industry and a subsidiary of armored solutions provider Plasan Sasa, announced on July 19 that it will open a new manufacturing facility in Walker, Mich., USA, to support future mid-to-high-volume base model programs for the North American automotive industry.

“This new facility represents the next phase of Plasan Carbon Composites’ commitment to the automotive industry,” said James Staargaard, president of Plasan Carbon Composites. “We are grateful to the State of Michigan for their support of this technology and true job growth initiative.”

The new facility represents the commercialization of Plasan Carbon Composites' new carbon fiber processing technology, building on the investment announced in December 2010 of a Customer Development Center in Wixom, Mich. PCC has installed the first scale-up press for the new technology at its Wixom facility, which is now operational. The Walker manufacturing facility is expected to generate more than $18 million in capital investment, creating 202 new jobs over the next three years. Both the Customer Development Center and the new manufacturing facility are supported by incentives from the Michigan Economic Development Corp. (MEDC).

PCC will maintain its Bennington, Vt., facility as a key manufacturing location focused on advanced autoclave technology for which it is successfully pursuing growth business.

Plasan says its new carbon fiber processing technology will allow for production of between 30,000 and 50,000 vehicles annually, with future improvements to reach 100,000 vehicles.
