Volkswagen’s new Passat now includes interior decorative elements finished using Impact Coating’s PlastiCoater PVD (physical vapor deposition) vacuum metallization equipment. Used by German plastic component manufacturer Varioplast, the short-cycle system enables integrated and automated production cells with injection molding and PVD metallization.

According to Impact Coatings, its PlastiCoater Lean PVD production solution reduces costs, shortens lead times and improves quality compared to traditional metallization methods. Adding UV lacquering to the production line, it also provides a cost-efficient and chromium-6-free alternative to chromium plating on plastic.

Varioplast uses the solution for its inline metallization process finishing both decorative and functional molded plastic. The company says the process will replace electro-chromium plating at its plant.
