Birchwood Technologies’ MicroLok AO and Tru Temp finishes are formulated to provide corrosion protection for oil and gas drilling components using safe, low-temperature and environmentally friendly processes.
Well-suited as a non-polluting replacement for cold blackeners, MicroLok AO protects iron and steel components, forming a non-toxic, aluminum oxide conversion coating that is 0.000060" (1.5 microns) thick and silver/black in color, and tightly adheres to the metal surface. When sealed with a rust preventive, the finish is said to provide robust corrosion protection that is better than cold blackening at less cost and without pollution hazards. MicroLok AO contains no regulated chemicals, so process rinse waters are generally sewerable as non-hazardous discharge.
Additional benefits include anti-galling protection to aid in assembly and startup, temperature stability as high as 1,400°F, safe 120-140°F operation with no boiling or splattering, no scale or sludge buildup in tanks, and simplified bath maintenance that requires only pH monitoring.
Birchwood’s Tru Temp low-temperature black oxide finish is formulated to protect valves, couplings, pumps and associated oil and gas drilling components against corrosion while providing break-in lubricity and anti-galling protection. The satin black finish is just 0.5-microns thick and can withstand as many as 100-150 hours of neutral salt spray (ASTM B 117) or several hundred hours of humidity (ASTM D 1748). Tru Temp also contains no EPA-regulated chemicals, so its process rinse waters are sewerable as non-hazardous discharge as well.
