In "Automotive Carbon Fiber Composites: From Evolution to Implementation," author Jackie Rehkopf provides a summary of carbon fiber composites in the automotive industry over the next five years.

SAE International (Warrendale, Pa., USA) has announced the publication of Automotive Carbon Fiber Composites: From Evolution to Implementation, a book that provides a high-level summary on carbon fiber composites specific to the automotive industry in today's market and its vision for the next five to 10 years. The book begins with a comprehensive overview of how composites started to be investigated as a possible alternative to metals, mostly driven by military demands.

In addition, the book covers:

  • Fiber and resin types for automotive applications
  • Composite constructions
  • Manufacturing processes
  • Machining and joining
  • Reclaiming and recycling of these materials

Author Jackie D. Rehkopf is the senior researcher at Plasan Carbon Composites (Bennington, Vt., USA), a leading Tier 1 producer of carbon fiber composites for the U.S. automotive industry. Working out of Tennessee at their facility at Oak Ridge National Laboratory and out of Wixom, Mich., in their Customer Development Center, she leads Plasan's research in carbon fiber composite constituents and constructions, focused on commercialization. Rehkopf also is principal investigator of a three-year, DOE-sponsored project on predictive modeling of carbon fiber composites in automotive crash applications.
