Erema in Austria has a new system that combines recycling and compounding in a single step. Dubbed Corema, it is based on the idea of using inexpensive recycled materials to make customized compounds in one pass without intermediate cooling. This gives recyclers more ability to customize materials and provides compounders more leeway to buy and recondition scrap. For example, this approach is said to be suited to processing inexpensive mixed fractions such as PET/PE with additives, and also to producing 20% talc-filled PP from nonwoven waste.
Erema (U.S. office in Ipswich, Mass.) has teamed up with Coperion (U.S. office Ramsey, N.J.) on the process. Raw material is is fed into the Erema cutter/compactor, where it is cut, homogenized, heated, dried, and buffered. The preheated material is plasticated in a tangentially fed, single-screw extruder and cleaned in the fully-automatic, self-cleaning filter. The melt is then fed to a Coperion co-rotating twin-screw extruder for compounding and devolatilization. Systems are available for 660 to 8800 lb/hr.
