Birchwood Casey offers a line of eight different aqueous and solvent-based inhibitors and sealants to prevent rust and corrosion on all metal surfaces. Providing precise corrosion resistance, rust preventative and corrosion inhibiting products enable selection according to needs for lubricity, dryness and decorative appeal.

Referencing a corrosion resistance comparison chart, manufacturers can select the exact rust preventative that will best suit their needs. The different product formulations allow for variables such as the type of metal surface in question, term of protection needed, and conditions of exposure in handling, shipping and storage. Special considerations such as removability and post-treatment operations can be considered in the selection of the correct product.

The company’s four solvent-based products provide protection for various metal surfaces, including raw steel/casting inventory, in-process parts, finished products in distributor warehouses, or parts in long-term storage or overseas shipment. Rust inhibitors are graded based on their performance in ASTM B117 salt spray testing and/or ASTM D1748 humidity testing. Depending on the rust inhibitor selected, the user can achieve protective coatings with either a slightly oily water-displacing film, or a dry-to-touch, non-oily sealant, or a soft-waxy, self-healing film. Two of the products are also available in high flash point, non-VOC versions for areas with sensitive air quality requirements.

Following similar ASTM grading, the four water-based products provide a range of protection levels and surface appearance. These products include a water-dilutable oil, a dry water-based sealant, a satin-gloss acrylic polymer or a high-gloss urethane polymer sealant. None of these aqueous products have any VOC content or flash point.
