Nearly 50 new PVC compounds that incorporate new biobased, non-phthalate plasticizers and other formulation enhancements that address the “green” concerns of wire and cable users will be introduced commercially in the first quarter of 2013 by Teknor Apex Co., Pawtucket, R.I.

Nearly 50 new PVC compounds that incorporate new biobased, non-phthalate plasticizers and other formulation enhancements that address the “green” concerns of wire and cable users will be introduced commercially in the first quarter of 2013 by Teknor Apex Co., Pawtucket, R.I. To be sold under the BioVinyls tradename, like the initial compounds launched at NPE2012 in April (see our NPE Materials feature in May), these compounds are made with Dow’s Equilibrium seed-oil-derived plasticizers and reportedly offer better thermal stability and color hold than conventional PVC compounds. Targeted to applications such as power cord, appliance wire, data cable, and tray cable, the new RoHS- and REACH-compliant compounds will be the first wire/cable offering from Teknor Apex made with the new plasticizers. Other improvements include eliminating bromine and antimony additives while  achieving a level of flame and smoke performance comparable to, or somewhat better than, standard PVC, as well as a reduction in VOCs. There are also alternative compound formulations that reduce acid-gas emission on burning by around 50%.
