Walter Surface Technologies’ Bio-Rust non-corrosive solution is designed to eradicate rust on iron and mild steel, and provide a safe, biodegradable alternative to hazardous, labor-intensive processes. It can be used virtually anywhere rust is present, including in fabrication shops to clean steel prior to painting or coating, or in the transportation and military sectors to clean intricate mechanisms.
The solution is formulated with chelating agents that work to detach iron oxide from steel. Workers immerse and soak parts in the liquid at room temperature, where it can remove 1.0 kg (2.2 lbs) of iron oxide per 20 L of liquid. Once the rust is removed, the workers rinse the parts with water then immediately apply a corrosion-protection product or a long-term corrosion inhibitor.
Highly acidic rust-removal solutions can damage parts during cleaning, but this product is formulated to react only with iron oxide without damaging the parent material, non-ferrous alloys, or painted or plastic surfaces, the company says.
The solution is said to be safe for workers and the environment because it does not use highly corrosive and toxic acids, and is free of volatile organic compounds, solvents and phosphates. It also is non-flammable and does not require costly storage or complex disposal procedures.
