PPG Industries’ protective and marine coatings business offers a range of copper-free marine coatings formulated to help protect commercial ships from fouling and discoloration during the building process and while in service. Sigma Nexeon coatings are designed to protect the vessels’ underwater hulls while stationary in seawater so as to minimize cleaning costs before delivery to the field. This also helps reduce the environmental impact without compromising on operational efficiency, the company says.

The absence of copper in the coatings makes their application smooth, resulting in improved ship fuel efficiency. This also means the coatings do not produce a “'whitening” effect when applied.
