The Thermo Scientific Explorer 4 with MQA software is a fourth-generation analyzer that uses scanning electron microscopy/energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM/EDX) for quality analysis such as the size, shape, number and elemental composition of non-metallic inclusions in metals.

According to the company, these inclusions play a major role in determining the properties and quality of metals. Too many, too few or the wrong composition, and the product will not perform at specification. Some inclusions also can clog nozzles in the production process, leading to downtime and potential loss. This system can automatically characterize thousands of inclusions per hour to provide a statistical foundation for critical production decisions, the company says.
