Slippery Coating Simplifies Cleaning of Liquid Tanks, Minimizes Waste

LiquiGlide CleanTanX coatings are designed to reduce material and operating costs, minimize wastewater and fresh water use, mitigate bacterial contamination and corrosion, and decrease downtime caused by cleaning tanks between batches.

LiquiGlide expands its super-slippery coating platform beyond consumer packaging to focus on industrial applications. The company’s LiquiGlide CleanTanX system offers a solution to challenges created by viscous liquids sticking to industrial equipment, such as blenders, reactors and tanks. According to LiquiGlide, the product has shown reduction of up to 95 percent of product waste, wash water and the associated cleaning costs.

“Viscous products sticking to the inside of tanks leads to huge ineffiencies across industries,” says LiquiGlide co-founder Kripa Varanasi. “For example, in paint manufacturing alone, paint sticking to the inside of mixing and holding tanks costs the industry more than 100 million gallons of lost product and billions of dollars per year in associated waste costs.”

As chairman of the board and MIT Professor, Varanasi says the coating aims to minimize waste generated in the industrial use of viscous products.

LiquiGlide’s CleanTanX system is custom-engineered for each coating application depending on manufacturing specifications and product properties. The company also works closely with customers to validate coating performance, product compatibility and cost savings.

LiquiGlide’s CleanTanX technology was invented at MIT and is based on liquid-impregnated surfaces. The company’s permanently wet coatings create lubricated surfaces that eliminate the no-slip boundary condition between viscous liquids and solid surfaces that causes products to stick to tank walls, resulting in costly product losses and waste.

The product is designed to reduce material and operating costs, minimize wastewater and fresh water use, mitigate bacterial contamination and corrosion, and decrease downtime caused by cleaning between batches.
