The Metex Rack Stripper SS-20 from MacDermid is designed to electrochemically dissolve and remove nickel, copper and other plated metals from a variety of types of stainless steel rack tips. Nickel and/or copper are removed by electrolytic dissolution and drop out of the solution on the tank bottom as the metallic sludge. Thin chromium deposits about 0.0001-inch (0.25-mm) thick are removed by dissolving the underlying nickel and/or copper, and chromium metallic particles fall to the tank bottom and accumulate in the sludge.
The mildly acidic solution has a pH of 6 to 7 and can be integrated into automatic plating systems. It is said to offer a consistent stripping rate that is faster than immersion systems, and eliminates hazardous nitrogen oxide fumes.
