The metal plating industry typically analyzes aggressive sample matrices such as acid solutions containing metal ions that are problematic for most Total Organic Carbon (TOC) Analyzers. Poisoned catalysts, clogged sample lines, and shattered glass often result, causing frequent system maintenance and expensive downtime, according to GE Analytical Instruments, maker of the new Sievers InnovOx Laboratory TOC Analyzer. The InnovOx uses a “supercritical water oxidation” technique designed to achieve greater than 99% efficient oxidation on the most difficult sample matrices, including plating solutions. Consequently, the analyzer can run hundreds of TOC samples continuously without any recalibration, system maintenance, or replacement parts, according to the company. The InnovOx is also said to remove problematic sample matrix contamination at the end of every analysis, eliminating salt and oxidation by-product buildup in the reactor, tubing and valves.
