Birchwood Technologies offers a variety of water-based and solvent-based inhibitors and sealants to prevent rust and corrosion on virtually all metal surfaces, selectable based on the user’s needs for lubricity, dryness and decorative appeal. The different product formulations allow for variables such as the type of metal surface, term of protection needed, and conditions of exposure in handling, shipping and storage. Options such as removability and post-treatment operations also can be considered.

The water-based products offer 24-72 hours salt spray protection and a range of surface appearances. They include a water-dilutable oil, dry water-based sealant, satin-gloss acrylic polymer and high-gloss urethane polymer sealant.  None have any VOC content or flash point, the company says. They are widely used on tooling, motion-control components, automotive parts and on applications.

The company’s solvent-based products offer 48-120 hours salt spray protection for metal surfaces including raw steel/casting inventory, in-process parts, finished products in distributor warehouses, or parts in long-term storage or overseas shipment. Depending on the rust inhibitor selected, the user can achieve protective coatings with either a slightly oily water-displacing film; a dry-to-touch, non-oily sealant; or a soft-waxy, self-healing film. Three of the products are also available in high-flash-point, low-VOC versions for areas with sensitive air-quality requirements.
