A Special Message from RIGHTech Fabrications

What Is A Watt?

At RIGHTech Fabrications, we are mechanics and builders, materials selectors and experts in electrochemical engineering. We have nearly half a century of experience building gear for anodizers and platers. At the core of all that knowledge is an engineer’s familiarity with how all the pieces build on one another to create the processes on which metal finishing relies.

The electrical component of our designs always starts with Ohm’s Law. In 1880, Alessandro Volta invented the electric cell that is the basis of electrochemistry. By 1827, George Ohm used Volta’s invention to determine that voltage, the driving force of the cell, is always related to the current flow in the cell and that the two are, in turn, always related by the resistance in the cell. He wrote:

E (for Voltage) = I (for Amperage) x R (for Resistance measured in Ohms)

In cell design we are concerned with the power used and the heat it can generate, watts. Check out this video to understand just what a watt is. What's a Watt?

1 Volt x 1 Ampere = 1 Watt

We know that one watt has the heat effect of 3.412 BTU’s per hour. See our previous blog to understand better understand BTU’s. Herding BTU's

In a typical anodizing tank,

            12 volts x 2,000 Amperes = 24,000 Watts     or    81,888 BTU’s/hour

If we don’t use a Stainless Steel or Zirconium Gridcoil heat exchanger to cool it, a 4’ x 4’ x 8’ tank will heat up by 10oF per hour, making good anodizing surfaces impossible.

For more than 50 of the 200 years since Volta and Ohm made the discoveries that makes our industry possible, RIGHTech has been here to help you figure out What’s Watt? in the plating and anodizing business. Put us to work for you.
