Finishing Experts and Solutions on Tap for Sur/Fin
The annual conference and trade show will be held June 4-6 in Cleveland, Ohio.
Have a question or in a quandary about your finishing operation? Not sure what technology your shop will need to get to the next profit level? Ever wonder what hard chrome plating in the age of REACH will be like?
If so, Matt Akin wants you to come talk to more than 400 experts and gurus in the surface finishing industry at the Sur/Fin conference and trade show presented by the National Association for Surface Finishing, which will be held June 4-6, in Cleveland, Ohio.
Akin, president of plating software firm TrueLogic and chair of the Sur/Fin steering committee, says that, with more than 180 industry supplier companies on hand and more than 80 technical presentations during the show, attendees will be able to garner information on the latest technology and trends that will make their operations more efficient and profitable.
“When you count all the many technical experts from the supplier side who will be on the show floor plus the educational technical presentations taking place, then there are hundreds of people at Sur/Fin who are there to specifically help shops and OEM get better,” he says.
Even if an operation is running fairly smoothly, there is still loads of valuable information that can be obtained throughout the event, as well as numerous contacts that can be made through networking and events.
“I like to believe ‘you don’t know what you don’t know,’” Akin says. “That’s why every finishing operation should attend Sur/Fin, look around and talk with people. It’s amazing who you will run into, or maybe who has a solution to a problem you didn’t even know existed.”
The event starts the morning of Monday, June 4, with technical sessions including “Automotive I: Performance Solutions Impacting Today and the Future,” “Advances in Surface Finishing I: Functional Chromium Technology” and “Waste Management Perspectives Connecting Finishers.”
Sur/Fin’s Technology Advisory Committee (TAC) culled only the most pertinent subjects from hundreds of papers. The result was 83 presentations that will span more than 42 hours.
“Over 60 percent of the accepted abstracts are from speakers who did not make a presentation at Sur/Fin last year,” says Coventya’s Brad Durkin, chair of the TAC. “This is a very exciting indicator that there will be many new perspectives and input into the technical program that should make it more interesting and informative for our audiences.”
The first keynote address, by Darrick Gula, director of North American business development for Bolta US, will begin at 1 p.m. on Monday. A “soft opening” on the trade show floor at 5 p.m. that day will give attendees the opportunity to meet exhibitors in a casual setting, and the trade show and conference will kick off Tuesday morning with the second keynote address from Cleveland Indians broadcaster Matt Underwood.
Tuesday evening is set aside for the annual “Industry Night” social at the nearby Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, which will include a night of food, drinks and music from the Surfin’ USA band, made up of finishing industry personnel. On Wednesday, the technical sessions will continue and the exhibit floor will be open, highlighted by a plating “boot camp,” an introductory course on the plating process that will take place in the afternoon.
