Question:

One of my clients has a repaint problem with his truck. He wants someone to do a failure analysis using a wet sample of the paint. Name and phone number and address would be greatly appreciated. Thank you. W.C.

Answer:

Before your client spends a lot of effort having the paint test, it would be wise to remind him that the greatest single cause of paint failure is poor surface preparation. As a rule, the paint is rarely the cause. The world’s best paint poorly applied can fail. Conversely, the world’s worst paint properly applied can hold up well.

People who do paint failure analysis are list under “Testing Laboratories, independent, paint finishing” in the Products Finishing Directory and Technology Guide, available at 800-950-8020.
