Repainting Warehouse Racks
We recently have been asked to repaint old warehouse racks. Is there a good, easily available chemical to clean them before we paint them with an industrial paint? Do we need to prime them before we paint them?

Q. We recently have been asked to repaint old warehouse racks. They are steel structures. The paint has chipped off in some places and they are showing slight rusting. Is there a good, easily available chemical to clean them before we paint them with an industrial paint? Do we need to prime them before we paint them?
A. The first thing to do is clean the racks to remove any dirt and oily soils. Next, you must do something about the rust. You can remove rust chemically or by abrasion - that is, by sanding, wire brushing, sand blasting etc. As an alternative, you can use a dried-in-place chemical/phosphate/rust remover such as those sold in auto parts stores to pretreat the rust spots. Then, prime the pretreated rust spots. Finally, apply your industrial paint to the entire surface.
