Gardner Business Index Shows a Strong Finish for 2017
Appears in Print as: 'Strong Finish for 2017'
The Finishing Index registered 54.6 in December, ending the year on an upswing.
Registering 54.6 for December, the Gardner Business Index: Finishing ended 2017 on a strong, positive note. This latest reading closes the calendar year with an average reading of 54.1, besting the index’s strong performance in 2014. The December reading also was up approximately 11.0 percent over the same month one year earlier.
Gardner Intelligence’s review of the underlying data for the month of December indicates that supplier deliveries, new orders and employment lifted the index higher, while production, backlogs and exports pulled the index lower. During the fourth quarter of 2017, new orders exceeded production more times than not. In Gardner Intelligence’s experience, such a pattern often precedes strong future growth for the industry. The faster expansion of new orders over production often has an immediate positive impact on the readings for backlogs and/or exports as well. This again proved true in December, as backlogs expanded at their fastest rate since early 2017. Overall, we expect the finishing industry to have a strong start to 2018.
