Top Shops: Annual Pretreatment Chemical Purchases

The Top Shops spent about $200,000 a year on pretreatment chemicals in the latest Products Finishing Top Shops Benchmarking Survey, well above the median and averages in the industry.


Top Shops: Plating Chemical Expenditures

The average plating shop spent just over $586,000 on chemicals in 2017, with the median at $235,000. The Top Shops, however, spent roughly $760,000 on plating chemicals in the most recent Products Finishing Top Shops Benchmarking Survey, while the remaining 20th percentile averaged just $45,000 a year.

The most productive plating shops in the 2018 Products Finishing Top Shops Benchmarking Survey say they will grow by about 15 percent this year, compared to just 5 percent for all other shops.

Top Shops: Gross Sales per Finishing Line

The best run shops in the Products Finishing Top Shops Benchmarking Survey average about four times the revenue per finishing line than all other shops, according the 2018 survey data. The Top Shops averaged about $2 million in gross revenue per line, while those in the 20th percentile averaged around $450,000.

Top Shops: Type of Operation, Liquid/Powder Coatings

More than 66 percent of the shops that took the Products Finishing Top Shops Benchmarking Survey for liquid and powder coaters say they consider themselves a “job shop,” which is an independent shop with less than 50 percent contract work.

Top Shops: Finishing Usage Per Day

The average was 13 hours per day, and the median was 12. All other shops used their lines about 9 hours per day. The statistic shows how much utilization the shop was having in a typical day, showing that most Top Shops have two shifts operating on most workdays, while other shops have just one.

Top Shops: First Pass Quality Yield

In the 2017 Products Finishing Top Shops Benchmarking Survey for liquid and powder coatings, the Top Shops (those in the 80th percentile) averaged 99 percent approval on first pass inspection, while all other shops had a 94 percent pass rating. The median was 98 percent, and the mean was 93.8 percent.
