HMG Paints (Manchester, U.K.) has supplied its decorative coatings – including a bespoke coating for brewery purposes – to the award-winning Howard Town Brewery in Glossop, Derbyshire. Having occupied a modest 1,500-square-foot-unit at absolute capacity for over a decade, Howard Town embarked on a painstaking renovation of a 6,000-square-foot warehouse next door, putting in a state-of-the-art, Simatec brewhouse.

Howard Town Brewery worked closely with HMG Paints to specify the correct coatings, including a unique coating HMG dubbed “Brewery Paint.” Howard Town used this high gloss anti-microbial acrylic coating on the walls and ceiling of the refurbished brewery. The coating utilizes a silver-ion additive that provides 99.99% protection against harmful bacteria, mold, fungi and viruses.

Howard Town is best known for being a traditional cask brewery meticulous about the balance and consistency of its quality cask ale. As part of the refurbishment, Howard Town used HMG’s standard range of decorative products in the new Tap Room, where customers can sample the beers on site. Specifically, the brewery used HMG’s Vinyl Matt Emulsion and Trim Paints, which HMG color-matched to the Howard Town brand colors.

Unfortunately, the impact of COVID has meant that customers haven’t been able to fully embrace the new Tap Room and see the full impact of the refurbishment, but the owners, husband and wife team Stuart and Emma Swann, recently launched an e-commerce website where customers can purchase beers no matter where they are in the UK.

“This project highlights what HMG does best,” comments marketing manager Paddy Dyson. “In working with Howard Town we found a bespoke solution for their needs. Being a local manufacturer was also key as we could manufacture and deliver the paint directly to Howard Town as it was needed.”
