Barry Coffey, who founded Metalx, a nickel stripping specialty products sipplier, passed away January 18 at age 76.

Coffey and his wife, Gayle, started Metalx in 1975, and he held several patents for products developed for the metal finishing industry, many of which were environmentally non-toxic alternatives to the conventional acids and cyanide-based formulations that were currently being used.

Coffey leaves his wife and daughter, Dr. Tonya Coffey, and husband Dr. Christopher Thaxton of Boone and their children, Nick and Zoe Thaxton; a brother, Thomas Coffey and wife, Patsy, and a sister-in-law, Virginia Sue Coffey.
