More than 66 percent of the shops that took the Products Finishing Top Shops Benchmarking Survey for liquid and powder coaters say they consider themselves a “job shop,” which is an independent shop with less than 50 percent contract work. Just over 22 percent say they are a “contract shop,” which is an independent shop with 50 percent or more contract work. Just over 11 percent say they are a “captive shop,” meaning they are a component of a larger company.

The Top Shops averaged about $2 million in gross revenue per line, while those in the 20th percentile averaged around $450,000.
