MaxPhase, a coating material, has similar corrosion and electrical properties as plated hard gold. With only a fraction of the material costs of gold, it could eventually replace gold as plating material, according to the company. The coating also uses a vacuum deposition production method that eliminates the use of environmentally harmful wet chemical plating. Current high material prices represent strained margins for connector suppliers and increased connector prices for the electronics industry.
The new coating material was developed by ABB (based in Switzerland) and Impact Coatings (Sweden) together with Scandinavian universities.
