Norton | Saint-Gobain introduces its Red Heat R983 product line of abrasive belts and discs featuring a grinding aid lubricant designed to minimize changeover time for grinding and polishing of Inconel, stainless steel, carbon steel and other metals. The Red Heat R983 series includes flap discs and quick-change discs for applications in markets such as welding, MRO, transportation and aerospace, and it also includes a line of belts suited for MRO, medical, aerospace, foundry, welding and transportation industries.

According to the company, Red Heat products require less pressure, producing a cooler cut and quality finishes. The product features Norton's fiery-red Y-Plus weight and an engineered backing that creates a greater surface area, allowing more adhesion points for maximum grain retention and less grain shed and edge wear, so that belts and discs last longer and won't split, rip or stretch.

Norton Red Heat R983 Flap Discs are available in three shapes: type-23 conical fiberglass back; type-27 flat quick-trim plastic back, and type-29 conical, high-density fiberglass back, in sizes ranging from 4" × 5/8" up to 7" × 7/8". They are also available in TS (Type II) and TR (Type II) in sizes ranging from 1 ½" to 3".

Configurations include file, portable, benchstand, backstand and wide belts, in lengths from 11" to 700," stand widths from 1/8" to 52" and grit sizes from P36 - P120. All Norton Red Heat belts are made to the user's exact requirements.

Surface finish types for commercially supplied stainless steel sheet are detailed in various standards. ASTM A480-12 and EN10088-2 are two; BS 1449-2 (1983) is still available, although no longer active. These standards are very similar in that they define eight grades of surface finish for stainless steel. Grade 7 is “buff polished,” while the highest polish—the so-called mirror polish—is designated Grade 8
