GOAD Company (Independence, Mo.) is renowned for its long-lasting, trouble-free process tanks for finishing applications, as well as linings, liners and critical containments. The company recently introduced its TANKeye PLUS leak detection alarm system. The TANKeye PLUS system provides continuous pre-leak detection; alerting operators (visual and audible alarm) if a pre-leak occurs. GOAD says the system offers 100% assurance of tank integrity without the need for periodic maintenance checks. If a pre-leak is detected, the alert allows for the non-emergency scheduling of repair since the detection occurs before there is an active leak to the tank exterior.

The new leak detection system is the latest in GOAD’s efforts to help finishers avoid containment failures — work that involves more than tanks. Decades of witnessing the failures of coatings as a means of secondary containment for pits and floors has made the company an expert on secondary containment of wet process systems.

“Far too often, finishers invest significant funds in process lines; but the backbone of the system, the equipment that provides the critical containment of harsh chemistries is overlooked and underspecified,” says Tyler Goad, operations manager. “Design/build providers offer generic specifications in design, then seek the lowest cost fabricator who can meet the generic specification. This results in end users stuck with prematurely failing containments a few years after installation.”

GOAD’s approach to secondary containment involves large, pre-fabricated panels that are bonded to the concrete substrate and joined with the company’s patented N-FUZE Welding technology. The company recently released a video explaining the importance of secondary containment and the measures that should be taken to prevent containment failure.

In the video, GOAD illustrates the ways that cracks in concrete can lead to failure of liquid or spray-applied coatings, resulting in a breach in containment. Such breaches lead to environmental and worker safety concerns, loss of productivity and material, and can necessitate expensive repairs.

GOAD’s secondary containment solution consists of overlaying pits or floors with its N-FUZE protective liners prior to the installation of tanks and equipment. The company guarantees no weld failures, providing secondary containment for the life of the facility.
