The Line on Oshkosh MRAPs

While line extensions are a matter of course in the auto industry—you know, variations in powertrains, trim level, whatnot—things are significantly hard core in the defense industry.

Consider the Mine-Resistant, Ambush Protected (MRAP) All-Terrain Vehicle (M-TAV) lineup from Oshkosh Defense, a division of Oshkosh Corp.

First, there are two multi-mission models, the M-ATV Standard and the M-ATV Extended. The former is for various offensive and defensive missions off-road; the latter has additional troop and equipment capacity.

Both feature things like the Oshkosh TAK-4 independent suspension system and integrated cab crew protection.

But then there are the variants for the MRAPs. As in:

M-ATV Standard Base (SXB)

M-ATV Standard Upgrade (SXU)

M-ATV Standard Special Forces (SXF)

M-ATV Extended Intervention (EXI)

M-ATV Extended Engineer (EXE)

M-ATV Extended Command (EXC)

We’re betting that there’s a whole lot more to this than new front and rear fascias and dark headlight surrounds.
