Dr. James Rawlins

TITLE: The World of Surface Coatings is Centered Around the Glass Transition Temperature. But which one?

James Rawlins received his B.S. in Polymer Science in 1993 and his Ph.D. in Polymer Science and Engineering in 1999, both from The University of Southern Mississippi. He began his professional career with Highland International, Inc., a protective coatings manufacturer in Boone, NC before joining Bayer Corporation as a Senior Research Chemist in Pittsburgh, PA. In 2002, he was promoted as a Technical Marketing Director for Europe, operating out of Leverkusen, Germany. In 2004, Rawlins joined Southern Miss as an Assistant Professor of Polymer Science and Engineering where he now directs a 30+ member research team that includes 10 graduate students. He has delivered over 95 professional presentations, published 27 peer-reviewed articles, 57 conference papers, and holds 10 U.S. and 3 European Patents. His research efforts have won him several awards, notably the American Coating Show Best Paper Award in 2008. His research interests focus on corrosion control, functional coatings, synthesis and characterization, and structure-property relationships for polymer matrices in surface coatings, composites, and adhesives.

OPENING SESSION GUEST SPEAKER

Dr. Joseph LIchtenhan - Founder of Hybrid Plastics

TITLE: POSS Surfaces: How They Impact Biological and Industrial Polymer Coatings

Dr. Lichtenhan is a pioneer and world authority in the field of POSS® Nanostructured® Chemicals. His insights into their commercial utility launched the global sales for POSS® in 1998. Prior to starting Hybrid Plastics, he served for seven years as a Technical and Business Area Director for the Polymeric Components Program at the Air Force Research Laboratory Rocket Propulsion lab. He received his BS from Kansas State University and a Ph.D. from the University of California at Irvine. www.hybridplastics.com/

About the School of Polymers and High Performance Materials

The School of Polymers and High Performance Materials at the University of Southern Mississippi offers undergraduate and graduate programs leading to Bachelor of Science, Master of Science, and Doctor of Philosophy degrees in Polymer Science and Engineering and in Sports and High Performance Materials. The goal of our undergraduate and graduate program is to educate incoming students in the theory and practice of polymer science, which is revolutionary and changing the face of our society. Students in all of our degree programs receive valuable training for a career in academia, commerce and manufacture which process and use polymeric materials. The University of Southern Mississippi's School of Polymers and High Performance Materials has always pursued excellence in undergraduate and graduate studies and many of our former students hold prominent positions in many scientific and technical organizations. Our graduates are found in all corners of the nation.
