Copper Plating of Brass
Can we plate copper directly onto brass faucets using an acid copper bath?
Q. Can we plate copper directly onto brass faucets using an acid copper bath? We currently use cyanide copper on the brass prior to the acid copper but would like to eliminate the use of cyanide in our operations. S.J.
A. You cannot plate a brass substrate directly with acid copper, because the acid in the acid copper bath will attack the brass substrate and give you unsatisfactory results. However, a number of chemical vendors sell alkaline non-cyanide copper plating baths that can be used in the application of a copper strike prior to plating with acid copper. Find those vendors in the PFOnline supplier database.
