Question:

Can we powder coat frames used inside the tank body of electrical transformers? These frames are exposed to transformer oil (IEC 335), so the coating must be oil resistant. They are also exposed to temperatures as high as 100°C. Will the powder coating survive these conditions? U. K.

Answer:

Electrical transformers, both pad and pole mounted, are routinely powder coated. The coating of choice is epoxy because of its high chemical resistance. Epoxies can tolerate your heat requirement, as well. I see no problem in using powder coating in this application. With a track record of 20 plus years, using epoxy powder coatings on transformers isn’t too risky. But just in case, discuss this application with any of the numerous powder suppliers and test it with the oil at operating temperature just to be sure.
