Paperless Parts (Boston, Ma.) has updated its quoting platform with a feature that makes the PDF files commonly shared with RFQs more accessible and actionable. As a result, job shop manufacturers and fabricators can not only turn around quotes faster, but also make more accurate and consistent estimates.

While experienced estimators typically take on RFQs and work from PDFs of 2D CAD drawings that inevitably miss some vital information, Paperless Parts says its new features allow estimators of all experience levels to interact with these files and data in valuable new ways.

First, the dynamic measurements function enables quick interaction with a print to understand dimensions when users do not have a 3D model. Users can click on the print to take dimensions that are not clearly labeled but may impact fixturing or spacing, can toggle between unit measurements and can annotate documents for future reference. These annotations include timestamps to allow users to better understand the history of the project and stay up to date.

In addition, new vectorization and analysis capabilities turn PDFs into Drawing Interexchange Format (DXF) files to extract complete data, improving estimating accuracy and reducing return materials authorizations.

Improved security features strengthen shops’ ability to securely share drawings with external vendors, enabling shops and vendors to better communicate parameters for particular projects.

“We strive to be one step ahead of our customers’ needs to be successful and competitive as Industry 4.0 becomes reality,” says Jason Ray, co-founder and CEO at Paperless Parts. “This new feature not only makes PDFs more usable, but it also opens up the estimating process to more people in a job shop so the shop can respond faster to demand. Ultimately, we believe this will help our customers win more jobs at accurate prices and support their customers with greater efficiency.”
