Products Finishing has announced that its 2022 Finishing Hall of Fame program is now open for nominations. A committee will be assembled to review the nominations and vote on selections. Inductees will be announced in the February 2022 issue of the magazine.

PF’s Hall of Fame program is committed to recognizing historically significant individuals who have been instrumental in the development and growth of the surface finishing industry. Nominees are sought from the electroplating, anodizing, powder coating, liquid coating, electrocoating, mechanical finishing and vacuum coating industries.

Nominations for the 2022 Finishing Hall of Fame are being accepted now through December 31, 2021. Each nominee must be notable for one or more of the following reasons:

  • The nominee significantly improved surface finishing efficiency and productivity through process or technology innovations.
  • The nominee established widely accepted best practices in surface finishing areas such as applications, product development, quality, safety, or supply chain and logistics.
  • The nominee set new standards for surface finishing in areas such as innovation, technology and industry education.
  • The nominee influenced, supported or advocated for the surface finishing industry through research, writing, activism, policies or thought leadership.
  • The nominee promoted and advanced the surface finishing industry through volunteer efforts in local chapters or national committees of related organizations.

  • Electroless Nickel Coatings: Appearance, Gloss and Surface Morphology

For decorative coatings, appearance is the essential purpose for application, but also for functional surface finishes it becomes increasingly relevant as an added value on top of specified technical requirements.  Appearance is affected by spectrum and intensity of incident light, roughness and morphology of the coating surface, optical properties of the coating material, eventual superficial oxide films, and individual perception.  The predominant factor is surface roughness, which in turn depends on base material roughness, quality of substrate pretreatment, and nucleation and growth kinetics of the electroless nickel (EN) deposit. Interdependency of gloss measurements with roughness measurements and with chemical composition of coatings was investigated for new generation mid-P EN processes and compared to traditional ones.
