Game Changer: Powder Coatings Get CARC Approval
In a normal R&D scenario, a coating specification is written and approved by a large customer or OEM, then followed by a race among suppliers to meet the spec and sell to the finishing masses. But that isn’t the case for most of the military and other finishes Hentzen Coatings of Milwaukee, Wisc., has developed over the years.

Dr. Phil To The Rescue for Electroplaters
Techmetals’ president Phil Brockman is often the last electroplater that some customers visit on their search for solutions to persistent finishing issues or to plate unique parts. But it’s easy to see why most major aerospace, medical, defense, oil/gas, mold shops, and automotive manufacturers end up at Techmetals’ expansive facilities in Dayton, Ohio.

Battle for CARC Powder Coating
Sherwin-Williams and PPG were awarded research grants by the Department of Defense in June 2012 to develop a zero-volatile organic compound, zero-hazardous air pollutant exterior topcoat to replace the military’s current generation of liquid-applied chemical agent resistant coatings (CARC) by 2015.

Development of Life Prediction Models for High Strength Steel in a Hydrogen Emitting Environment
Solvent substitution for maintenance and overhaul operations of military systems has been a primary environmental concern for many years. Cadmium replacement in these systems has been targeted for decades. Both of these areas have a common obstacle for implementation of any potential alternate. Hydrogen embrittlement of high strength steel is the most predominant unforeseen hurdle since high strength materials show sensitivity to the phenomena and the source of the hydrogen can be anything within the fabrication process, maintenance practice or the natural corrosion cycle. Standardized testing on this issue has traditionally stemmed from the aerospace industry where it is a principal focus.

Electrodeposition of Nanocrystalline Cobalt-Phosphorus Coatings as a Hard Chromium Alternative for Use in DoD Acquisition Programs
Electrolytic hard chromium plating (EHC) is a critical surface finishing technology that is used for applying functional coatings for corrosion and wear resistance to aircraft components in manufacturing operations and for re-build of worn or corroded components. However, EHC plating baths contain hexavalent chromium, which is a known carcinogen and environmental hazard. Therefore, the replacement of EHC in aircraft manufacturing activities and maintenance depots is a high priority for the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD).

Aerospace Sector Plans Rebound
Aerospace is our featured topic this month in Products Finishing magazine, and one of the pressing issues facing those who make their living off of contracts from the military and aerospace companies is the health of the industry. Last fall, the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers wrote to President Obama in order to help preserve the aerospace and defense industry and its workforce from the substantial downsizing that defense budget cuts would bring. But Craig Hanriot, president of leading aerospace metal finisher Technical Metal Finishing in Burbank, Calif., says the plea to maintain defense spending may have been too little, too late. He says the culmination of the Iraq war, Afghanistan military activities winding down and a huge national debt were enough for the U.S. Congress to cut military spending by $350 billion over the next 10 years.

Navy Is Full Steam Ahead On Powder Coating
With the military increasing its use of powder-based coatings to cover vehicles, equipment and ships—the Army has recently announced that it will allow the use of powder coatings in its CARC coverings that are normally e-coated—more assets are getting the powder coating treatment than ever before, much to the joy of the powder manufacturers.
